Northwest Hydro Consulting Engineers (NWH),
a national Class-A design firm, directly under China Hydropower Engineering Consulting Group Co., has been consistently listed at leading place of China top 100 Investigation & Design firms since 1992 and accepted by the World Bank since 1997 the qualified consulting service undertaking design consulting service for the projects loaned by the World Bank. NWH owns qualifications/certificates in mutltidisciplinary consulting services e.g. engineering design, investigation, consulting service, supervision, environment impact assessment (EIA), EPC contract. NWH has a right to undertake oversea project management and project contract, and has an experienced professional team with 519 certified designed engineers engaging in engineering design, investigation, supervision, consulting service for hydroelectric project, civil works, urban construction planning, road, bridge and culvert works, etc. In 1995, NWH passed authentication of the ISO 9001 quality system.

To date NWH is staffed with 2056 members including 1423 professionals (135 professors, 546 senior engineers and 438 engineers, 14 specialists who is entitled with special government subsidies and 1 national design master, 1 young specialist who is awarded with prize of achievement excellence.

NWH has successfully completed investigation and design of more than 20 large and medium-sized hydropower stations such as the Longyangxia, Lijiaxia, Liujiaxia, Yanguoxia, Bapanxia, Daxia, Qingtongxia, Baozhusi, Bikou and Shiquan etc. with total installed capacity of 7,055 MW. More than 10 large and medium-sized Hydropower projects, such as Laxiwa, Jishixia, Kangyang, Bakun, Malaysia etc., are under construction (total installed capacity of 8,270 MW). NWH has also undertaken engineering supervision for many large and important projects such as Three Gorge Project on the Yangtze River, Xiaolangdi, Lijiaxia, Daxia, Xiaowan, Etan, Pingban etc. Nowadays NWH is engaging in pre-feasibility study and design of Ludila Hydropower station on the Jinshajiang River and etc (total installed capacity of 4,600 MW).

Since 1978, NWH has awarded nation-level and ministry (province)-level prize for design excellence and scientific advance for 226 scientific research activities. During nation’s ninth-five-year plan, the national projects of importance such as Lijiaxia, Baozhusi, Daxia etc. were constructed and put into service. LIJIAXIA hydroelectric station is the first station in China to adopt arrangement of double-row units in powerhouse, with its unit installed capacity ranking the first place in the world. Longyangxia hydropower station was awarded the golden prize for national design excellence, and Baozhusi hydropower station was awarded silver prize for national design excellence, silver prize for engineering geological investigation, and accredited with AAA certificate. Daxia Hydropower station won silver prize for national engineering design. Urgent mitigation for slope creep of Hancheng hydropower station was awarded bronze prize for national science and technology progress.
